FAQs

  • When does Kindergarten registration open?
    • Kindergarten registration for the 2026-27 school year begins on Tuesday, February 3 at 9 am.
  • How do I register my child for Kindergarten?
    • To register your child for Kindergarten in a Whitehorse-area school, go to yukon.ca/register-child-school on Tuesday, February 3 and complete the online registration process.
    • To register your child in a rural community, you can visit the school in person.
  • Will there be a lottery for French Immersion this year?
    • We have allocated space for 54 students at Whitehorse Elementary and 18 students at Selkirk Elementary. These allocations are based on registrations we received last year.
    • A lottery will be held if these spaces are filled and there is still demand.
    • If one French Immersion school is full, students may be offered a spot at the other school.
    • We do our best to accommodate all students who register for French Immersion through our programs at Selkirk Elementary and Whitehorse Elementary.
  • Should I sign up for both my attendance area school and a French Immersion program in case I don’t get into French Immersion?
    • No. Parents should only register once per child, for your preferred program. If you want your child to attend a French Immersion program, please select this option.
    • We work very hard to try to accommodate all students in French Immersion between Selkirk and Whitehorse Elementary.
    • If your child does not get into the Kindergarten program and a space becomes available, your child may have the opportunity to enrol in French Immersion in Grade 1.
  • When and how do I find out what school my child has been assigned to?
    • Once we have reviewed and approved the registration forms, we will contact you to inform you which school your child has been assigned to.
    • Once your child has been assigned to a school, the school will ask you to show a birth certificate or other proof of age for your child, and you will fill out some additional forms.
  • Do all schools use the online registration?
    • No. Rural schools and École Émilie-Tremblay work directly with parents to register students.
    • What is registration? Will I still have to register my child with the school?
    • After students are registered with the online form, they will be assigned to a school.
    • Once parents receive a notice of which school their child has been assigned to, they then need to complete the registration process with that school.
  • What is meant by ‘regular program offered in my attendance area school’?
    • The regular program offered in my attendance area school refers to the standard English language program offered at the school in your attendance area.
    • Students who are enrolling in a regular English language Kindergarten program are required to attend the school in their attendance area.
    • Attendance areas, sometimes called catchment zones, are used to assign students to schools near to where they live.
  • What about French Immersion programs? Do we have to go to the school closest to where we live?
    • French Immersion is a special program that is offered at Selkirk Elementary and École Whitehorse Elementary and students from all over Whitehorse can register for either school.
  • What about First Nations School Board schools? Do we have to go to the school closest to where we live?
    • Any student in Whitehorse can apply to either Takhini Elementary or Grey Mountain Primary. Enrollment in these schools isn’t based on your residential address.
  • What happens if I have registered my child to our attendance area school but he/she doesn’t get a spot?
    • If we cannot accommodate all students at an attendance area school, we have historically taken in-area siblings first and then in-area students on a first-come, first-served basis to manage registration.
    • In the event the number of students registered exceeds the number of spaces at a school, we work with the parents and school community to determine what options are available and offer the most suitable alternative.
